I’m guilty of this: My son comes to me with a homework question, and I lend a hand. He asks a follow-up question, and I help. Soon, I’m doing the long division for him. Bad idea.
One of Connor’s teachers even mildly scolded me last year for offering too much help. I thought I was being an involved dad. But the teacher made a great point: She wouldn’t know what Connor didn’t know if I stepped in too much. And ultimately, he would suffer. As school starts, be interested in your son or daughter’s work. But resist the temptation to come to their rescue.
