In continuing with our friends with benefits theme today, I review the movie Friends With Benefits. If you’re interested in hearing about a recent study about friends with benefits and casual sex, click here to see what I found out.
Dylan (Justin Timberlake) is a talented graphic artist, and Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a headhunter. She contacts Justin about a job as art director at GQ magazine. After he accepts the job, their relationship turns from professional to personal. They lament the emotional complications in being boyfriend and girlfriend and decide, instead, to try being “friends with benefits.” A strictly sexual relationship sounds appealing, but emotions quickly enter the picture. Justin and Mila try to date other people, but jealousy ensures. They realize they share more than a sexual bond and decide to become a couple.
A “FWB” relationship can’t last long. The sex may be great, but an emotional attachment is inevitable. The couple can either part completely or admit their feelings and move into a romantic relationship.
The funniest part
When Mila’s mother walks into her apartment while she and Justin are having sex. Instead of being appalled, her mother thinks “friends with benefits” is a marvelous concept and encourages them to continue.
Why I liked it
Friends With Benefits is never preachy. Even if you disagree with the conclusion (that FWB relationships can’t work), the movie is entertaining. The dialogue is sharp, the plot twists unexpected, and the chemistry between Justin and Mila believable. If for no other reason, watch the film to see a semi-nude Mila. Very, very hot.
